Abstract

ABSTRACTThe morphophysiology of ratoon is different from the main plant of rice and was influenced by location and cultivation.This research was intended to evaluate morphophysiology characters of rice ratoon planted by direct seeding system in tidal swamp at various stubble cutting height. The experiment was conducted in November 2013-April 2014 at tidal swamp overflow type B in Telang Sari Village, District of Tanjung Lago, Banyuasin, South Sumatra Province. The experiment used randomized block design with 5 replications. Treatment was stubble cutting height 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 cm above the soil surface. Rice was planted at 4 m x 5 m plot, the distance between plot 1 m. Data were analyzed by test of variance and 5% HSD test. Morphophysiological characters of rice ratoon were influenced by stubble cutting height. Cutting height of 20-40 cm above soil surface increased the ratoon number of tillers per hill, leaf area per hill, dry weight per hill, percentage of empty grains per panicle, grain weight per hill and percentage ratoon/main crop production per hill. The higher stubble cutting, the lower the number of leaves per tiller, leaf area per tiller, carbohydrate content, and number of grains per panicle of ratoon, however it accelerated age of flowering and harvesting. Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of photoperiod, indole acetic acid (IAA), and phosphorus on soybean plant growth and seed quality during storage. The trial was carried out at Sebapo Experimental Station, Jambi, Center for Post Harvest Research and Development, The Ministry of Agriculture and Center for Forest Research and Development, The Ministry of Forestry, Bogor from November 2009 until June 2010. Split-split plot design was used consisted of three factors, i.e. photoperiods (12 and 14 hours 54 minutes) as the main plot, concentrations of IAA (0, 75, and 150 ppm) as subplot, and dosages of phosphorus (0, 60, and 120 kg P2O5 ha-1) as subplot. The result showed that photoperiod, IAA, and phosphorus application had significantly improved production and seed quality. The path analysis showed that the weight of 1,000 seeds affected other variables. The seed protein content has the largest path coefficient compared to other variables. The treatment of mother plant with 14 hours 54 minutes photoperiod combined with IAA of 150 ppm and P2O5 of 120 kg ha-1 resulted in the highest seed quality during 90 days of storage in room temperature.

Abstract

Agronomical Activities to Increase the Potential of the Swampy Land To Be Food Sources.  Swampy land is potentially large enough to increase the production of food crops and holticulture. Out of the land area of about 13.2 milion hectares, only about 5 percent has been used intensively. The main problems in land use is the water system and soil fertility. Agronomic activities that can be done to improve the productivity of the land, among others, are improving the water system control, soil amelioration, cropping patterns and use of improved varieties. These activities can increase the production of food crops and holticulture. These activities should be carried out by considering environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Pollen of oil palm is one of important components that might affect productivity of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). Viability and availability of pollen directly affect the quality and quantity of oil palm. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of storage container and time of storage to pollen viability. This research has been conducted at Seed Preparation laboratory of PT. Sampoerna Agro Tbk, PT. Bina Sawit Makmur Mesuji Kabupaten Ogan Komering Ilir. The experimental design being used was Factorial Randomized completely design with two factors were storage containers i.e. Pirex tube reaction (M1), Film Ampoule (M2), Vial bottle (M3) and Glass Ampoule (M4) and time of storage i.e. storage for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months. Each treatment was replicated three times. Parameters being observed included pollen viability, potential of maximum growth and pollen growth rate. The results showed that storage container and time of storage influenced potential maximum growth significantly but there was no effect on pollen viability and pollen growth rate

Abstract

This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of main crops harvest cutting height on the yield of rice ratoon in the tidal swamp by using direct seeding system. The experiment was conducted in Telang Sari village, District of Tanjung Lago, Banyuasin, South Sumatra Province from November 2013 to April 2014. It measured plots 4 x 5 m through a randomized block design with 5 replications. The treatment was main crops harvest cutting height of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 cm above the soil surface. The results showed that the effect of cutting height on rice ratoon yield depends on the condition of photosynthetic and the amount of remaining nodes on the main crops stubble as an emergence ratoon shoots. The main crops cutting height of 20-40 cm above the soil surface increased the number of productive tillers, grain weight per hill, yield per plot, ratoon ability to grow per plot, and the rice ratoon/main crops yield ratio in tidal land by using direct seeding system.

Abstract

The potential of swamp land to support national food security has been studied through a desctiptive study. The area of swamp land in Indonesia is estimated at around 34 million hectares. The land consists of tidal swamps of around 60% and the remaining is swamp lowland of about 40%. The land spreads from the island of West Papua in the east to Sumatera in the western part of Indonesia. Of that swamp land area, about 14 million hectares is suitable for agricultural crops. Form the total of swampy area, about 4,92 million hectares has been cultivated for rice plants and around 5,04 million more hectares is suitable for expansion of rice cultivation development. The productivity of swamp land is quite low at around 2-3 tons/ha of hasvested dry grain (HDG). With land improvement, the productivity can be increased to 5-7 tons/ha of HDG. The development of the potential of swamp land can be improved through water management and land improvement technology. This technology is followed by extensification and intensification activities on the land that has been cultivated and the land which is potential for the development of rice plants. The results of the study reveal that with water control and land improvement, the extensification could be increased from 10 million hectares to 20-30 million hectares per year. Rice production is increased from 30 million tons to 60-90 million tons of rice per year. This means that swamp lands have fairly high potential to support national food security.
