Abstract

This paper is to argue that literature studies may help reveal the formation of young Indonesian female Muslim identity by looking at the books they read and write. It will particularly discuss two popular Islamic Chick Lit Santri Semelekete [Funky Islamic Boarding School Girl] (2005) by Ma’rifatun Baroroh and Jilbab Britney Spears: Catatan Harian Sabrina [Britney Spears’ Headscarf: Sabrina’s Diary] (2004) by Herlinatiens. The first part of the discussion will examine some external aspects such as physical presentation, biographical details of the authors, and publication-related matters. Then, using such side-line information, the next part will discuss the novels’ contents to see in what way they offer some cultural analysis of youth identity in contemporary Indonesian society.

Abstract

Abstract

English literature studies in Indonesia has to undergo a paradigm shift, given the demographic change of users and providers of English, to say nothing of the growing interests in Asian literature written in and/or translated into English. Mindful of our postcolonial experiences in todays cultural and political context, the use of more literary pieces from Southeast Asian countries in English Literature studies is all the more important. This paper locates Southeast Asian literature within the development of English as a Lingua Franca. Characteristic of our postmodern age is the recognition of people as human; and, in this case, Asian people as individuals, multilingual and multicultural subjects. As such, reading and evaluating works from the region may help develop a deeper understanding when defining our own place in relation to other people. It is through engaging in contextual and humanistic literary experiences that we measure and value the connection between literature and life.

Abstract

In order to interact and work with diverse communities in this deeply interconnected world and to help solve such global issues as human rights abuse, ecological damage, economic poverty and extremism, we need to continually recognize and exchange values/perspectives across cultures and boundaries. Border-crossing is a complex but necessary web of interactions and dependencies among nations to create global peace and justice. Taiwan-Indonesia border crossing is insufficient, given that no formal diplomatic relation exists between the two countries excepting the informal such as trade and investment, people-to-people relations, education and popular culture industry. Taiwan and Indonesia similarly shared long history of nationalism, anti-communism, and democratization, but it remains under studied how these historical comparisons are reflected through literature. This paper will argue that transnational translation of literature can connect and define both nations better so as to enhance global connectedness. Thus, the crossing of the cultural boundaries by Taiwanese and Indonesian co-cultures through the translation of diverse literary works may give hope for future development of a mutual, emphatic understanding of each other?s cultures.?DOI:?https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2018.010209

Abstract

Literature is an important vehicle to teach character building in language education. Sensitive topics like bullying and prejudice in literary works are helpful to promote understanding and empathy toward others. This article aims to discuss two short stories, namely “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury and “Shame” by Dick Gregory that can be used to increase students’ critical thinking, conscience, and compassion in language learning. The first half of the article examines the rationale for using short stories with such topics to impart values in language learning. The other half explores the significance of the two stories to use in ELT class. The article concludes that studying literature is, by default, practicing character education and that good support and reinforcement for that purpose can be done by addressing delicate issues that sometimes may appear harsh and unpleasant. DOI: doi.org/10.24071/llt.2019.220107

Abstract

The present study is aimed at providing translating theory of English into Indonesian and vice versa. In achieving the aim, content analysis of expressive (poem), informative (report andacademic), and vocative text (advertisement) is applied. The analysis is based on threeaspects consisting of grammatical structure, cultural words, and writing mechanic. The resultshows that the translator needs to adapt the grammatical structure, cultural words, and writingmechanic of source language into target language. However, there are exceptions in culturalwords and capitalization. In translating from English into Indonesian especially in academictext, some English words are assimilated into Indonesian (foreignization). In translatingIndonesian poem into English, the target text capitalization imitates source textcapitalization. Besides, for the purpose of attractiveness, persuasion, and effectiveness intranslating Indonesian advertisement into English, different words are prefered but themeaning is retained. Abstract

The Philosophy of translation is excluded from the framework of translation studies. Nevertheless, it is actually essential for developing the theory and practice of translation aswell as solving both internal and external challenges toward the theory and practice oftranslation. Hence, this article proposes the inclusion of philosophy in the framework andoffers a communicative-functional paradigm as the philosophy of translating from Indonesianinto English and vice versa. This paradigm construes translation as interculturalcommunicative act directed by the target-side purpose. It is rooted ontologically as therecodification of matrix code into target code which results in what Ricoeur calls as theequivalence without identity, epistemologically with the employment of cluster concept andaxiologically by directing intercultural mediation with three ethical principles i.e. the primacyof purpose, the loyalty to people and the respecting difference. In Indonesia especially inYogyakarta, based on the interview conducted to professional translators in PéMadInternational Translation, this paradigm has been internalized by Indonesian translatorswithout conscious reflection of the paradigm as the philosophical foundation of theirtranslation practices. Keywords: translation, philosophy, communicative-functional paradigm
