Abstract

A study on teaching prose is also expected to emphasize on critical thinking of the students in learningEnglish as a foreign language. One of the appropriate topics is teaching gender quality through Englishnovel. This article is based on a study which addresses questions: (1) Why do the women exclude ineducational realm? (2) What is the gender quality pictured in Byatt’s The Shadow of the Sun? (3) Howis gender quality in The Shadow of the Sun reflecting excluding women in educational realm. Theoriesabout excluding women in educational realm, women in Indonesia, and teaching literature arediscussed and criticized as well as analyzing Byatt’s The Shadow of the Sun in answering thesequestions. The findings of this research are: (1) Women exclude in educational realm because educationfor women based on educational norms for men, reproductive education, and systematic devaluation ofwomen. (2) The gender quality pictured in Byatt’s The Shadow of the Sun is about a daughter whofaces her life as the effect of patriarchal system. (3) The gender quality exclude women in educationalis about the main character, Anna and every woman in the story.

Abstract

Being literate in English as a second language needs practice culturally and socially. Every body practices indifferent culture and societies. In order to gain the significant findings, we need to conduct the thorough study. Thisarticle is based on a study which addresses the following questions: (1) What are the literacy practices experienced byAn Indonesian student in English speaking country? and (2) How are the literary practices experienced by an Indonesianstudent in English speaking country? Theories discussed are about literacy as cultural and social practices. The findingsof the research are: (1) The literacy as cultural and social aspects of an Indonesian student in English speaking countryare the literacy practices in family during childhood, the family’s perception about learning English, the influence ofteachers, finding enjoyment in reading and immersion in learning The Subject experienced literacy as cultural and socialpractices in different ways for each theme. The ways are : being introduced to books to before school age, being asked tounderstand the book by her father, the involvement of his father during the process by providing the English storiesWhat the Subject did for literacy as cultural and social practices are the answer of the second question of this study.

Abstract

Many studies on learners’ literacy in the language they learn reflecthow a learner learns a language. However, becoming literate in that languageis a personal experience. A case study conducted to an Indonesian postgraduatedegree Program at La Trobe University in Melbourne Australia gives anoverview of this reflection in which an EFL student being literate in English.This article is based on a study which addresses questions: (1) What are thefactors that enable an Indonesian adult student to acquire good literacy inEnglish, (2) In what particular ways that adult Indonesian student’s perceptionsabout her competence in English contribute to her academic studies in Englishspeaking. (3).To what extent are the contributions of becoming literate inEnglish to the Subject academic study as the perspectives of holisticeducation.The findings of this research are: (1) The factors that enable anadult Indonesian to acquire good literacy ability in English as the first questionof this research are family literacy practices, family’s perceptions about learningEnglish, teacher’s approach, preference for reading, and immersion in learningEnglish, (2) the Subject had two particular ways in which she developed hercompetence in English reading and writing: the way she engaged in the academicworld and the way she immersed herself in the English speaking country whenshe followed the Master Program, (3) The contribution of becoming literatein English to the Subject academic study as the perspectives of holisticeducation is in terms of self-concepts, the role of past experiences, and learningstyle.. Abstract

Different student has different experience in the process of reading. In order to know astudent’s experience relating to the use of reading, it is expected to conduct a thorough study.This case study answers the research questions about a student’ perceptions on her readingexperience in terms of the process of reading; (1) What did an English department student of theTeacher Training and Education Faculty of Riau University experience in the beginning of theprocess of reading? (2) How did an English department student of the Teacher Training andEducation Faculty of Riau University experience the process of reading? These researchquestions are answered by conducting a case study. The findings of this study are; 1) An Englishdepartment student of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Riau Universityexperienced listening to the stories read by her teachers as well as her parent when she was in thekindergarten. (2) An English department student of the Teacher Training and Education Facultyof Riau University experienced the process of reading as described in the process of reading;interactive process experienced by predicting the content of texts and consulting dictionary interms of meaning, spelling, and the classes of words before reading the whole text. Puposiveprocess experienced by the participant was based on her purpose; academic purposes; byreading the course books and interesting reading materials, skimming and scanning the texts, andtelling friends about the content of texts she read and critical process experienced through whatshe did in interactive and purpossive process. This study suggests that teachers and lecturersneed to be aware of the process of reading faced by their students. The following study isrecommended with more participants in order to explore the other activities in the process ofreading.Key Words: Reading Process & EFL Learners

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this descriptive research was to find out about students’ reading strategies in their reading activities, inside and outside the classrom. The sample of this research was the fifth semester students of English Department of Riau University. There were 65 students participated as the sample of this research. The data were quantitative and the instrument of the research was a questionnaire which consists of 28 questions regarding the reading strategies they use inside and outside the class. The data were analyzed by calculating the score of the students in answering the questionnaire and classifying them to a certain category using Sugiono formula (2012). The results were that out of 65 students, the students’ response is strongly agree with the reading strategies such as: Identifying the purpose in reading (81,23%), using different silent reading techniques for relatively rapid reading (80,61%), analyzing vocabulary (80%), and guessing when we are not certain(80,30%). After that, the students’ response is agree such as : Using graphemic rules and patterns to aid in bottom-up reading (76%), skimming the text for main ideas (73,23%), scanning the text for specific information (73,53%), using semantic mapping or clustering (70,76%), distinguishing between literal and implied meanings (75,07%), and capitalizing on discourse markers to process relationships (74,15). This research recommended that the students to find out the suitable reading strategies for doing their reading activities. Further research can focus on studying each subtopic in details.Keywords: reading strategies, reading activities

Abstract

Abstract: This study presents the ability of fourth semester students of English Study Program University of Riau in writing summary of a short movie .This study was based on fourth semester students’ experiences that have learned writing summary text in second semester. Moreover, fourth semester students’ also have learned about literature in third semester in Introduction to Literature subject. Because the fourth semester students will learn literature subjects in next semester, they should be able to write summary in another source, for example from movie. The participants were 38 students of fourth semester students English Study Program University of Riau. The participants were selected randomly from two classes. This study was conducted in one writing test based on Harris (1986) criteria. The instruments of the research were one writing form and short movie entitled Now or Never (Youtube.com). The research finding showed there were fewer students got satisfied score, which was the average of fourth semester students’ ability in writing summary of a movie fall into poor to average level. Based on this finding, it was suggested to fourth semester students of English Study Program University of Riau to develop their skill in grammar, mechanic, fluency and organization because these were the important aspects in learning a language especially in writing.Keywords: writing summary, using short movie, fourth semester students’ ability.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to find out the habits of English reading among the students of English Study Program of Riau University. The method used in this research is quantitative research and the design is survey study. A questionnaire was used as the instrument of this research. The questionnaire involved seven indicators of reading habits: attitudes toward reading, reading frequency, reading materials read, time spend on academic reading, time spend on non-academic reading, motivation in the family environment, and motivation out of the family environment. SPSS Statistics 17.0 program was used to analyse the data. The data analysis displayed only a few number of students who have a habit toward English reading. The finding also proved that the frequency of students in reading English materials was less than 25%. However, the data of attitudes toward reading reveals that most of students (80.2%) aware that reading in English was important for their future. Conducting research to gain a broad overview of the reading habits of EFL learners, the researcher made suggestions to promote English reading habits among university students, especially the students of English Study Program.Keywords: Reading, Reading Habits, Survey Study

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive study aimed to find out the ability of fourth semester students of English Study Program of University of Riau in using reduced adverb clauses in sentences, and to analyze kinds of students’ difficulties in using reduced adverb clauses in sentences. This study was based on the students’ problem where they were still confused in using reduced adverb clauses in sentences even they had learnt it on second and third semesters. They will have any subject in the next semester that related to this topic, in this case that is TOEFL Preparation. Therefore, it was needed to do some research in order to know their abilities in using reduced adverb clauses in sentences. This research was conducted in two sessions; try out and real test. The instruments of this study were 40 questions and it was in transformation/ changing the passage test. The research finding shows that fourth semester students of English Study Program of University of Riau were still less average in using reduced adverb clauses. Their mean score was only 48 in the try out test, then in the real test students’ mean score was 50. This research also proves that the most difficult kind of reduced adverb clauses for students was reduced in passive since their mean score was only 30. Based on this finding, it was suggested to fourth Semester Students of English Study Program of Teachers’ Training and Education Faculty in University of Riau to re read and practice materials about reduced adverb clauses and re recognise and surely practiceabout how to make passive sentence again properly.Keywords: grammar, using reduced adverb clauses, fourth semester students’ ability

Abstract

Abstract Reading Journal is a possible instrument to find out what and how learners do extensive reading and explore their perceptions about what and how they read. This article is based on one of instruments for a study on Exploring Extensive Reading in Developing English Language Competency of Indonesia EFL Learners. The study is a case study and one of the data collected through journal entry. This article aims to present the findings of the study in terms of types of reading materials that an Indonesian learner read for extensive reading and learner’s perceptions about the reading materials. The findings from this instrument are: (1) types of reading materials that an Indonesian learner read for extensive reading were a book about health and a novel about ditective and (2) an Indonesian learner’s perceptions’ about reading materials were her interest in terms of the use for the book and pleasure for the novel. This study suggests that learners need to write journal for extensive reading materials. This study also recommends to include what learners learn in journal entry by reading the novel selected for further.Keywords: characteristics and benefit of Extensive Reading

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the student’s ability in comprehending report texts and aimed to find out the students ability in comprehending report texts for each component and the level of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy indicated in the ability. This research took place in SMAN 1 Bantan Kabupaten Bengkalis that collected from February to April 2017. The try out class was XI IPS 3 (26 students) and the sample was XI IPA 1 (29 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. The result showed that the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Bantan in comprehending report texts for each component is in good level which the mean score was 60.0, however, the students have not passed the minimum score of the school which is 76. For the level of remembering; finding factual information the mean score was 73.4, finding references was 42.5, finding meaning of difficult words was 42.2. The level of understanding (finding restatement) the mean score was 62.0, for the analyzing level (finding main idea) the mean score was 72.7. and the level of evaluating (finding social function) was 64.8. Therefore, this research suggested the English teachers to focus on the level and components that students still find difficulities and categorized them into poor level. Students should learn the components in report texts and other text types. Further researchers are expected to find the standard guidance of classification of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy indicated the components of reading comprehension.Key Words: Student’s Ability, Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy, Comprehending Report Texts.
