Abstract

The preliminary research had been conducted to gather information on nutritive values of various plants such as kayu jawa (Lannea coramandelica), mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia), and kelor (Moringa oleifera) to be used as alternative feeds for ruminant. It was expected that the research could generate recommendation for the suitability of those plants as the sources of ruminant ration, new research plan on the comprehensive nutritive values of the plants, and agronomic tests and their procedure in dry land farming systems.  Three replicates of leave samples of 3 development phases (old leaves, well developed leaves, and young leaves along with branches) were taken from the three plant species. Therefore, the number of samples was 27. An Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer was employed to analyze proxymat and mineral (Ca and P) content of the leaves. The research result showed that : (a) there was no interaction effect between the plant species and the leave development, (b) the content of all leave nutrients were affected by the plant species except that of fat, whereas the leave development significantly affected only the Calcium content, (c) based on the leave nutrient composition contained, M. oleifera and M. citrifolia could be used as alternative feed particularly for calcium and phosphorous supplies for ruminant in the Palu Valley to replace L. coramandelica which have been more popular, (d) As M. citrifolia and M. oleifera contained sufficiently high BETN level, these plants can be used as an alternative feed that can be mixed with other types of feeds containing non protein nitrogen (NPN), thus enhancing the overall feed nutrition. The research recommend that there is a need to proceed the research on L. coramandelica, M. citrifolia, dan M. oleifera as the source of feed for ruminant in the aspect of biological tests such as preferency and digestibitlity either in-sacco or in-vivo.  New experiments relating to growth measurements, productive and reproductive levels will comprehensively add the biological values of the three plants as the sources of ruminant feed.

Abstract

The research aimed to study the effect of adding duckweed smash to broiler chicken feed on relative weight of its liver and pancreas. The number of chicken used was 100 broilers. The study employed a Completely Randomized design with five replicates in which five broilers were used for each replicate.  The treatments included basal feed (R0), 97% basal feed with 3% duckweed smash (R1), 94% basal feed with 6% duckweed smash (R2), 91% basal feed with 9% duckweed smash (R3), and 88% basal feed with 12% smash duckweed (R5). The addition of the duckweed smash on broiler feed significantly increased both the relative weight of the broiler liver and pancreas.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh pengeringan daun turi terhadap karakteristik degradasi dalam rumen, melalui metode in sacco menggunakan kantong nilon. Daun turi segar dan kering dipotong/dicincang untuk mendapatkan sampel yang homogen dengan ukuran partikel 1 mm. Sebanyak 2 gr dari masing masing sampel daun dimasukkan ke dalam kantong dan diinkubasi ke dalam fistula domba dengan tiga ulangan. Sampel tersebut diinkubasi selama 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 dan 72 jam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat degradasi dan keteruraian bahan kering dan protein kasar dari daun segar lebih tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan daun kering. Nilai karakteristik degradasi pada daun turi segar yaitu 41,36%, 42,50%, dan 6,41% per jam masing-masing untuk fraksi a, b dan c, sementara nilai pada daun turi kering sebesar 7,93%, 55,53%, dan 2,22% per jam masing-masing untuk fraksi a, b dan c. Tingkat keteruraian protein efektif sebesar 74,77 dan 37,03% untuk daun turi segar dan kering. Berdasarkan hasil kajian ini, disimpulkan bahwa perlakuan pengeringan daun turi dapat menurunkan tingkat degradasi dalam rumen, dan diharapkan meningkatkan protein lolos degradasi dan selanjutnya meningkatkan suplai nitrogen (protein) pascarumen.

EVALUATION OF ELEUTHERINE (ELEUTHERINE AMERICANA) POTENTIAL AS FEED ADDITIVE FOR POULTRY

Abstract

In vitro studies were exploring eleutherine (Eleutherine americana) potential to be used as feed additive for poultry.  The eleutherine bulbs were extracted using four different organic solvents: methanol, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether and hexane.  The crude extracts were analyzed for their bioactive compounds, tested for anioxidant and antibacterial activity and tested for growth of non-pathogen bacteria. The results indicated that bioactives are indentified:phenol and tannin. Average of antioxidant activity were 33.74, 20.36, 15.14 and 1.98 ppm AEAC  for methanol, ethylacetate, diethylether and hexane, respectively. Furthermore, average of inhibition growth for  pathogen bacteria of Escherichia coli was 5.94, 4.75, 4.56 and 4.44  mm  for  methanol, ethylacetate, diethylether and hexane, respectively, while inhibition for  Staphylococcus aureus was 5.37, 6.50, 5.37 and 5.18  mm for  methanol, ethylacetate, diethylether and hexane, respectively. The extracts also have ability to enhance the gorwth of non-pathogen bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus. Average of bacteria growth improvement was 21.12, 28.57, 28.16 and 19.59 NTU for methanol, ethylacetate, diethylether and hexane, respectively. The presence of antioxidant and antibacterial activity and growth enhancer activity could be attributed to the bioactive and non digested carbohydrate content of the bulbs extracts.  Therefore, it  could be concluded that the bulbs of eleutherine extract is potential source for “feed additive” as phytobiotics as well as prebiotics.Key words: Eleutherine, Extract, Bioactive, Phytobiotics, Prebiotics
