Abstract

Microcrystalline cellulose is the most used material for medicine, which able to be found in fibrous plants. Microcrystal celluloses are being used as filler or binder in dosage formulas in tablets and capsules. This research aimed to produce microcrystalline cellulose from ramie based on pharmaceutical grade parameters. Research method include hemp fiber preparation, ?-cellulose isolation, microcrystalline cellulose production, and microcrystalline cellulose characterization which compare with Avicel® PH 102 . Result shown microcrystalline cellulose yield is 57.26%. The result of physicochemical characterization that can comply the specifications of pharmaceutical grade as a pharmaceutical excipient.  Keywods :  Microcrystalline cellulose, Ramie, physicochemical, pharmaceutical grade.

Abstract

Vitamin E (Tocopherol acetate) is used in both oral and topical dosage.  The aim of  the research was to study  different concentration of Carrageenan, as gelling agent in Tocopherol acetate Emulgels.  This experimental study was initiated by emulgel formulation using different concentration of carrageenan as gelling agent, as much as 0,5% (F1), 0,75% (F2), 0,85% (F3), 0,95 % (F4), 1% (F5), 1,125% (F6), 1,25% (F7), 1,5% (F8) and 2% (F9).  Tween 20 and Span 20 were used as emulsifiers (1 and 1,5 %),  Liquid paraffin as oily phase (7,5%), Propylen glycol as humectant (10%), propyl and methyl paraben as antimicrobial preservative (0,01% and 0,03%). The physical investigation of emulgel were included pH, spreading test, viscosity and freeze thawtest. The results for promising formula F5 showed that physical parameters of emulgels were in the range of requirement for topical dosage form. Keywords: Tocopherol acetate (Vitamin E), emulgels, carrageenan

Abstract

Turmeric rhizome (Curcuma domestica Val) and Trengguli bark (Cassia fistula L) contain antioxidant compounds which can be determined by 1,1-Diphenyl-2- Pycrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical inhibition method. This research was conducted to determine DPPH free radical inhibition by ethanol extract of turmeric rhizome, the ethanol extract of trengguli bark, and a combination of turmeric rhizome extract - trengguli bark extract (1:1,5) with ascorbic acid as a comparison. Identification of secondary metabolite classes is performed by phytochemical screening. Antioxidant activity was performed by inhibition of free radical color of DPPH using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The study showed IC50 value of ascorbic acid, as a comparasion, is 3,14 ?g/mL. While ethanol extract of trengguli bark has the best antioxidant activity with IC50 value 10,98 ?g/mL compare to combination ethanol extract of turmeric rhizome - trengguli bark (1 :1,5) and ethanol extract of turmeric rhizome with IC50 value is 13,70 ?g/mL and 41,95 ?g/mL, respectively. Keywords: Antioxidant, Curcuma domestica, Cassia fistula, DPPH Method
